In 1889, Raffaele Esposito, a pizza maker from Naples, was invited to prepare pizzas for Queen Margherita of Savoy during her visit to the city.
According to the popular legend, Esposito created three different pizzas for the Queen. Her favorite was the one topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. The ingredients displayed the colors of the Italian flag:

To honor the Queen, Esposito named the pizza "Margherita."
Whether every detail of the story is historically accurate is still debated by historians, but the Margherita became one of the most famous pizzas in the world and remains the symbol of traditional Neapolitan pizza today.
